I have enjoyed the artistic work of Peter Pracownik for several years and was very glad when I heard that he had turned his talent to the creation of a deck, under the guidance of  Terry Donaldson.   These two also worked together on the Lord of the Rings deck, and the Hobbits Tarot.

Pracowniks interpretation of mythical creatures has always stirred my heart, and over the years he has managed to produce some images which now hold the status of spiritual icons in my mind his wondrous interpretation of Stonehenge falls into this category for me.   (A version of this is available in the Peter Pracownik Greeting Cards set over here)

This is definitely in my opinion an advanced user's deck - you need to know the meanings of the cards independent of the symbolism you see, since in many cases you would not easily be able to intuit definitions from the images. That said, this is a stunningly illustrated deck with many strong and eye-catching images. If you like dragons as well as read Tarot this one is probably a must for you.

One of my favourite cards here is Major Arcana Strength - where a lion and a dragon flank a caduceus floating in the air above a verdant valley scattered with poppies.   The Hierophant intrigues mehere we see the central dragon controlling a tiny puppet dragon at his feet, as this climbs a ladder which leans against one of the star-scattered flanking columns.

The Hanging Dragon (Man) is beautiful, and the Moon demonstrates a trick of perspective which is quite a theme throughout the deck check out the waterfall beneath the dragons left wing.

Courts follow the traditional King, Queen, Knight, Page outline, and the Minor Suits are familiar.   It should be said that, whilst the pips are stunningly executed, theres little to prompt an understanding of the classic interpretation of each card again, prior knowledge of Tarot is required.

All the pentagrams on the suit of Coins are set against the background of a sacred maze symbol mazes and labyrinths are often said to represent the journey to the centre of self.  All suits are colour-coded, and most of the Wands have fire burning on them somewhere.  That waterfall (or its close relation) makes a re-appearance on the 8 of Wands beneath Glastonbury Tor.

The booklet is fairly adequate in its description of the Major Arcana - symbolism is clearly described and explained. The Minor Arcana has keywords, definitions only and the only spread included is that of the Celtic Cross.

All in all, this is a beautiful work of art and many of the images stand alone as outstanding paintings.
